Telugu Teachers Protest Intro of English Medium

Source: Newindpress

Members of the Teachers Associations’ Joint Action Committee (TAJAC) staged a "dharna" before the Municipal Corporation office in Visakhapatnam on June 22, 2005, in order to protest the introduction of English medium in the first and second classes of Municipal elementary and upper primary schools. Fortunately, the protest did not turn violent, as only "mild tensions" surfaced, displaying the teachers agitation with the system. VIRASAM State secretary Krishnabai stated that the introduction of English medium "was a ploy to damage the tradition and culture of the State, with which Telugu was closely linked." TAJAC claimed that the Municipal Corporation’s decision to convert schools to English medium was finalized without taking into consideration the opinion of parents nor teachers. Convenor SV Ramana, stated that it "was a ‘foolish’ decision to introduce English medium when most of the children and their parents were illiterates and could not read and write even Telugu properly. Moreover, introduction of English medium was against Government’s objective of promoting Telugu."
