On Sunday November 7, 2010, members of southern Ontario's Sikh community attended a Remembrance Day ceremony at the grave site of Private Buckam Singh at Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery - the only known military grave for a Sikh-Canadian soldier from both world wars.

He said Sikhs have a long military history as part of the British army during both wars, “but we never knew that we also had a part of Canada’s military heritage.”

GLOBAL: International student security

The promise of education is that it advances the human subject by conferring on each person a greater measure of ability, sociability, dignity and agency, greater power to form themselves and make their own lives in their time on Earth.

The promise of higher education and research is that we might find ways to better order the world so as to universalise ability, dignity and agency, and work together to solve our problems collaboratively. I am struck by the gravity of the issues at stake in this messy and unresolved debate about international student security.

International student security is not just about higher education or the global knowledge economy. It concerns the future world society and civil culture. It is about giving meaning to every life, not just the lives of those born in our own country, who might look like us, speak like us or share a religion.

We all want our lives to have meaning. If Nitin Garg's death helps to focus world attention on the problems of mobile persons, the gaps in their human security and the need for a workable global regime of human security, his life has achieved a greater meaning. Give him that honour. That way, he still lives.

Excerpts from "GLOBAL: International student security" by Simon Marginson, Professor of higher education in the centre for the study of higher education at the University of Melbourne. This is an edited version of a keynote address he gave last week at the World Universities Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

On Thursday September 3, 2009, Andhra Pradesh's beloved Chief Minister, Dr. YS Rajasekhar Reddy, died in a helicopter crash that also tragically took the lives of his four companions: principal secretary, Dr P. Subramanyam, chief security officer, Mr A.C.S. Wesley, and two pilots, Group Captain S.K. Bhatia and Captain M.S. Reddy. The Chief Minister's body was found in the jungles of Nallamala forest. The government helicopter was reported to have taken off in inclement weather.

YSR Reddy was a politician for the people and an advocate for the poor. His passion was to transform Andhra Pradesh into a well developed state. He was a rising star who ascended from the bottom of the political ladder by his own efforts and merit, and by all accounts was set to become a giant in statewide if not national politics. Reports of the unprecedented grief and shock by the public over the Chief Minister's death is indeed astonishing and telling. Perhaps a sad foreshadowing of things to come, in 2004, YSR Reddy was quoted as saying: “I will not continue in politics after I complete 60 years.”

Tollywood’s Changing: It's Getting Younger

Telugu films are changing with the times or shall we say with current demographics. According to The Times of India, 54 per cent of India's population is now under the age of 25, a fact that has caught the attention of Tollywood industry insiders bent on attracting younger audiences to view their films. If box office numbers are any indication, the trend doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon:

"Earlier only a couple of towns were considered A-centres in AP, but the list now encompasses Rajamundry, Tirupati, Nellore, Vijayawada, Kurnool and Guntur —ensuring more urban viewers. As more and more youth-centric films rake in big bucks at ticket-windows, Telugu filmmakers seem to be cashing in on the trend."

But can they compete with Bollywood offerings?

The Times of India reports that battle lines are being drawn between Bollywood and Tollywood, as an avalanche of big ticket Bollywood films at multiplexes have come at the expense of the local Telugu film industry.

According to industry insiders:

The policy of multiplex owners to allot more screens to Bollywood blockbusters could tilt the scales against Telugu films and is likely to dent their box-office collections. However, Krishnamurthy Kishen, head marketing of a leading multiplex chain clarifies that Bollywood and Tollywood films get equal weightage when it comes to assigning screens. He says, “We always try to strike a balance between regional and other films without riding on just one language hit.”

Airing a diametrically opposite view is Devaneni Prasad, director of another city-based multiplex, who claims that recent Telugu films haven’t really fared well. “With Telugu films not setting box-office afire, we’ll have more screens for Bollywood blockbusters. However, now Telugu producers have more choices with new multiplexes coming up,” he reasons. Ashish, honcho of a chain of multiplexes, rules out such worries. “We provide a level-playing field for all language filmmakers,” he assures.

National Drama Festival to be held in Hyderabad

Starting on March 16, 2009 there will be a four-day multi-lingual national drama festival in Hyderabad. The festival will feature nine plays (originally in Telugu) by renowned playwright Sri D. Vizai Bhaskar translated into Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Manipuri and Kannada:

Many feel that Telugu theatre is not on par with the theatre movement like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi, etc. where it is at its zenith. Though much has been done to elevate it in terms of script, music, dance, song and other embellishing ingredients, Telugu theatre suffers from lack of attractive histrionic presentations. It is also popularly felt that it is lagging behind in the field of Music, Sets and Light design and Aesthetics. There is no dearth of writers, actors, directors and musicians in Telugu. But the only thing to be supplemented to Telugu theatre is in terms of tuning Telugu drama on line with the latest performing skills. We felt that this could be achieved by a meaningful and purposeful exchange of ideas with the successful theatre movements like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi and other languages where theatre is at its zenith and hence this festival.

Translation Trends for Classical Telugu Literature

Obtaining classical language status for Telugu is one thing but getting people to actually read Telugu literature amid the popularity of English language texts is another. The Times of India describes this translation trend as "grim". Sporadic to begin with, Telugu literary works are mainly translated into English rather than other native Indian languages:

M Sridhar, a Telugu translator and professor of English in the University says, "Given a choice, people would prefer reading Adiga or Chomsky novels rather than Chaya Devi or Raavi Shastry. “Texts and literature sourced from English are still perceived as windows to the world." Most other Indian languages face a similar situation,” he added. (Times of India)

The Rebuild India Mission

Telugu Movie Actor Chiranjeevi Announcing the New Party

The Push for Telugu's Classical Status Continues

On July 19, 2008, Delhi Karnataka Sangha (a national forum which promotes Karnataka Cultural Heritage whilst interacting with the culture & tradition of India's other states) is holding a seminar on the Classical Status for Kannada and Telugu languages in Delhi.

The event was planned upon noting that the linguistic identity in India was undergoing a period of crisis and that speech communities were drifting apart over the nation's language politics. The seminar will last one day and is being organized in association with the Kannada University Hampi, Dravidian University Kupppam, Potti Sriramula Telugu University Hyderabad and Kannada Development Authority Bangalore.

Languages, which are not included in the eighth schedule of the constitution of India, are putting forward their case for inclusion in the list. Languages like Kannada and Telugu have stood the test of time. They were languages of the people in the first millennium and continued to be the media of expression in the new world.

The Government of India for political reasons, could not declare certain ancient languages as classical ones. The criteria for such a determination is:

a language should be of great antiquity
early texts must date back at least 1,000 years
the language must have a body of ancient literature and texts considered a "valuable heritage"
literary tradition should be original and not borrowed

Telugu's Endangered Literary Species

Newindpress recently featured an article by writer and translator, C. Mrunalini about how the “psychological novel” is becoming an "endangered literary species" in Telugu literature. Mrunalini's explanation for why writers have drifted away from the genre:

The immediate reason for this drift is the emergence of extremely strong, idealistic and absolutely essential literary movements, which stemmed out of inequalities and marginalisation in all spheres of life. The feminist, dalit and regional movements in Telugu literature brought about a social realism that left no scope for the writer to dwell on the mind of an individual.

Telugu pride Vs Telangana demand gives headache to TDP (via Indiatimes.com):

The TDP, which has stood for undivided Andhra Pradesh, is now seeing senior leaders openly expressing their support for a separate Telangana, citing recent election wins in the region.

Telugu Actor Krishna to Campaign for Congress (via Thaindian.com):

Veteran Telugu actor and former MP G. Krishna Sunday said that he will campaign for the ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh in the ensuing elections to the state assembly and the Lok Sabha. The actor Sunday called on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and assured him that he would work for the victory of the party in the elections scheduled to be held in March next year.

"Satya in Love" in Telugu (via Telugu.galatta.com):

Shivarajkumar-Genelia starrer Satya in Love will be dubbed into Telugu. The movie will be released in Telugu theatres with the same name by R. Shankar under Sri Choudeswari Prasanna Movies banner.

(New Jersey) Governor Corzine Welcomes Telugus at ATA meet (via IndiaPost.com):

"It is a tremendous contribution that Telugu Americans and Indian Americans in general are making to America, and are making to New Jersey," he continued. "Indian Americans are the most rapidly growing community in the state making great contributions."

Governor Corzine proudly pointed out that one of his senior ranking members of his cabinet Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri, who had served as governor of the state for a day when Corzine was on a visit to China, is of Telugu origin. Corzine also praised Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula - another Telugu American -- as one "taking a very important leadership position in the state assembly and doing a terrific job of it."

Sakshi Apologizes for Photo

Sakshi, a Telugu daily owned by YS Jaganmohan Reddy (the son of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajaskehara Reddy) has apologized for the publication of a photo of Christ brandishing both a cigarette and beer can in each hand. The image sparked protests from Christian organizations within the state who have demanded the arrest of those responsible.

Jaganmohan Reddy, Chairman of Jagati Publishers, which publishes the daily, tendered an unconditional apology for hurting the sentiments of Christians. In a statement, he said, “Sakshi will publish front page apology on Monday.” He sought forgiveness of the Christian community for inadvertently publishing the picture and clarified that the photograph was downloaded from the Internet by a sub-editor, who failed to notice its quality. Stating that the news paper was started with the blessings of the Christ and his family was a true Christian family, he appealed the people not to bring politics into this issue.

I discovered Locating Home: India's Hyderabadis Abroad by Karen Isaksen Leonard via Hyderabad on the Net. The hardcover, published in January 2007 by Stanford University Press, is a 416 page comparative study of Hyderabadi emigrants living abroad.

Amazon's product description reads as follows:

This book is a comparative study of Hyderabadi emigrants settling in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Canada, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates at the end of the twentieth century. Based on ten years of fieldwork and extensive interviews, it traces Hyderabadi culture and institutions in these places of settlement, looking at the different versions of Hyderabadi history transmitted and the personal networks and collective bodies formed abroad. Hyderabad, Islamic, and Urdu associations, in addition to other groups are surveyed, as are the marriages of the migrants and the subsequent generations.

The author shows how memories of old Hyderabad are retained, redefined, or discarded depending on generation, gender, class, and connections to the Nizam's former state of Hyderabad and the national narratives of the new sites of settlement. Throughout the book, she emphasizes the role of the state in identity formation, the importance of language and religion for retention and reformulation of identities, and the instability of diasporic communities both within and across national boundaries.

Gadde's Film Debut

The Times of India reports that former Miss India, Sindura Gadde's film debut in Sangamam awaits movie goers this Friday.

"The film is a beautiful story that deals with the importance of tradition in a rapidly changing world. The role is tailor made for actress Sindura who herself comes from a conservative Telugu family and also has travelled around the world quite a bit," says the producer, Ramesh Varma.

Ugadi (Telugu: ఉగాది) (literally - the start of an era) is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa. Ugadi is celebrated on different day every year because the Hindu calendar is lunisolar calendar. The Saka calendar begins with the month of Chaitra (March/April) and the Ugadi mark the first day of the new year...In 2007, Ugadi falls on March 20th.
